Update Ledger Nano S firmware

The update to firmware version 1.4.2 introduces minor security as well as user experience improvements. Please check our blog post for full details on the changes included in this update.

Before you start

  • Make sure you have downloaded and installed Ledger Live.
  • If the current firmware version is below 1.3.1, you need your Recovery sheet to restore your device after the update.

Instructions

A notification button will appear if a firmware update is available for your device.

  1. Click on Update.
  2. Click Continue once you've read the release notes.
  3. Your device will now display: update firmware, the version number and the Identifier.
    • Check that the first and last 4 characters of the Identifier shown in Ledger Live are the same as those on your Ledger device.

    • Press the right button on your device to install the firmware.
    • Enter your PIN code to confirm.
  4. Disconnect the USB cable when your device displays MCU firmware is outdated.
  5. Press the left button on your device and hold it while you reconnect the USB cable.
  6. Release the button once Bootloader is displayed. Wait until the confirmation window appears: Firmware updated.
  7. If your device reboots with the Welcome screen, the firmware update has reset your device and you need to restore it from your recovery phrase. Check this article for assistance. 

After the update

  • You've successfully updated the firmware of your Ledger Nano S. You can now re-install apps on your device.
  • If your PIN code has less than 8 digits, you can type in your PIN code as usual, and use the right or left button until you reach a checkmark (✓). Then, confirm by pressing both buttons.
